I agree with some of the previous posts but just want to add my 2 cents.
Do you spesifically want a outboard mixer or would you be comfortable
mixing in the box with a control serfice? To keep your options open I
would say anyway get a pc with firewire, then you have options for
both firewire and PCI or PCI-e.
RME makes great digital PCI cards but from what I've heard their
firewire stuff is not that great and for the feetures it's anyway way
over priced. Only thing with the RME digital cards is that you'll have
to get a external pre amp with ADAT outputs if you choose to get a
ADAT PCI card but luckally there's a lot of options for external pre
amps out there. The easyer option and one I would personally recommend
is one of the focusrite cards like the safire pro 40 which gives you
your 8 channel recording and a further 8 channels of ADAT input to
connect a external pre to go up to 16 channels of recording. Other
options for firewire 8 channel interfaces are the presonus firestudio
and there's also a firestudio tube with 8 solid state pre amps and 2
velve pre amps.
If not wanting a outboard mixer you can couple any of the above with a
control serfice, I hear the Mackie ones are really popular.
As a all in one solution you can also look at the Mackie onyx firewire
mixer. I'm not sure of the exact model but I know the biggest one will
give you 16 track recording directly from the analog mixer via
firewire, it's also a full analog board so you can basically record,
play out to the desk to mix in analog and then record your final
stereo mix back in to sonar.
