I notice the Epson 3170 available on their site at closeout is a
refurbished unit. Any comments on buying such a unit?

You may want to monitor periodically the EPSON refurbished / closeout page, as they sometimes have some really good deals. Expect more price drops by September, as a new wave of of scanners are likely to be released by then, and the old ones will be discounted.
