You are correct,  grayscale will be rather slow unless you have USB2 on 
your machine.  Good news is that a USB2 interface card for your PC will 
likely cost less than $20.

It was me, Sarah, who asked about scanning in grey scale on the Epsons.  I
only have USB 1, so I guess it wouldn't be any faster than my SCSI 
scanner.
