Opening the file in Wordpad may remove the weird style, but I'm not sure about the weird pagination. Even so, it's worth a try. Normal view is always better for proofreading as it identifies the page breaks.

Have you tried turning on the show all feature? Sometimes that is helpful.
If all else fails, you can submit the book with a note indicating what work needs to be done and ask Carrie to put it back on step one--or back in the check out list. That way all of your work won't be lost and someone might be able to solve the remaining problems.
Just random thoughts.

Hi, Lori, do you mean I should open my file using WordPad? I know this book has some kind of style thing, in fact it gives some kind of number or other
and I haven't the faintest idea about what to do about it. All I know is I
got rid of scanos, stripped all headers with the exception of the necessary ones, and the pagination is logical given there are six prefatory pages and
474 pages of text. I really don't know what to do. It reads well and I'd
hate to reject it because of all that work I put in. I have to save this
file as an rtf one for Bookshare. I proofread this book in normal view, but
maybe I should have put the file in Print view. I could go round and round
on this thing but prefer not to. Regards, Kim.

Kim, my comment is not going to help solve your problem, but I downloaded a
book to proofread which had the same pagination problem you described.
It was the book which had all the style issues, and when I solved those I
found that many pages contained just one line even though my page length was
set at legal. I think this is what you are describing.
I could not solve the problem and in fact rejected the book.
Have you tried opening the file in Wordpad, then saving it and closing it?
Maybe that will help. I do sympathize with your dilemma.
If someone can solve your problem, I hope the solution is posted to the
list.

Hi, Debby, I'll try and describe what I have in the document in question.
The page setup is in legal size, i.e., 14.5 by 8.5 inches. The prefatory
pages are okay. The trouble comes after page 1 which MS Word says is p. 7.
On p. 1 is just the title page of a novel called Jack the Giant-Killer.
After The title I hear "page break" then p. 8 in MS Word. In the printed
text I'm in p. 2 which has no text in it which I've noted by writing [This
page contains no text.] Then a couple of blank lines, then "page break"
and
here MS Word says "p. 8" and immediately after that"p. 9". The text on
this
page has quotations cited on it and the print page is p. 3. After that I
hear "page break" then "p. 9" and immediately after that "p. 10". This is
p.
4 in the printed text and has no text on it which I noted by saying that
the
page has no text (paraphrase of what I wrote above. In the actual file I
wrote [This page contains no text.].) Then there is a couple of blank
lines
then "page break" then " p. 10" and "p. 11", then print p. 5 which is
where
Chapter 1 starts. I hope what I've described to you makes sense. Regards,
Kim. P.S.: Does this bore you silly. I would call it exhausting since I
had
to tab between this message I'm writing and the file. K.

Hi Kim!

You can delete an extraneous page break by just hitting delete on it. I
have had to do that a few times, either because there was an extra one or
the text on the following page didn't read well until I deleted that
page's
page break and inserted a new one for some reason.

Also, have you set your page size to legal instead of letter? Perhaps
page
10 is a soft page break? I'm not sure. Does it say "page break" then
"page
10", or just "page 10"?

Debby

How do you delete a page break if it's extraneous to a document? I'm
having a devil of a time trying to get this thing right. I received a
note saying the file I proofread were missing page breaks. I know how
to put them in, but not how to take them out. My problem is I think
I've messed up my proofread copy of the file and I don't dare mess with
the raw file I was proofreading. This thing is giving me fits because
the text is all right and the way the file is supposed to look is in
the following way: 6 prefatory pages, p. 1, title page, p. 2, contains no
text, p. 3, quotations cited, p.
4, contains no text, p. 5 Chapter 1 and text. When the fifth page is
there, MS Word has a page break should say p. 11. Anyway, on print page
3, the page break ought to read p. 9 and not p. 10. I'm really thrown
by this and don't know what to do. If I haven't made myself clear on
this, I'm sorry. The book I'm working on is an omnibus by Charles de
Lint called Jack of Kinrowan which comprises two novels, Jack the
Giant-Killer and Drink Down the Moon.
So I'm having problems with the first novel in the omnibus. I'm stuck
and need help. Regards, Kim.
