Hi George

Thanks for that. I'm not brave, but will look at the link anyway as it is something that has always interested Ian greatly.

Hi Jackie,

If you are feeling brave, go to:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314459

Note however that you do need a 3.5 inch floppy drive on
your system.

George.

Hi George

Interesting. So dare I ask, how do you create an "Answer"
file?

You could get round the disk key by writing that down
beforehand if someone
gives you it I would have thought. I just find it hard to
imagine turning
on a computer from scratch, with no eyesight and nobody on
hand to ask, and
doing all that is required until you reach the point where
you install JAWS,
Window-Eyes or Hal, whichever is your preference. I
wouldn't do it, but I'm
intrigued nevertheless, and extremely sceptical.

Hi Jackie,

In theory, and even in practice, it is possible to do what
is called an "Unattended install" of Windows.
Professional
System Administrators do it all the time.

However, it first does require some technical expertise,
and
of course you need a pair of eyes to get certain details
such as the CD Key.

To put it in very simple terms, essentially you need to
create an "Answer File". Provided this is assembled 100%
correctly - the emphasis being on 100% - the answer file
will then provide the answers to the questions a Windows
installation asks you during the process.

George.

Well Andy, I'm going to be controversial here and say that
those who say it
can be done are being ever so slightly economical with the
truth. If you
install Windows from scratch, as in a complete full copy,
you have to know
what it's asking you, and unless you've got a photographic
memory and can
recall every step without a sighted person being within
reach of the screen,
I don't think you can do it.

If you have recovery disks that you tend to get with a
machine in a High
Street store, it generally wants to know things like
language, and your name
etc. There aren't so many steps to go through with a
recovery as there are
with a full installation of the actual Operating System
from
scratch.
Personally, because I'm cautious, I wouldn't do it without
sighted
assistance, just in case I was asked an unexpected
question
and pressed the
wrong option to accept. I just wouldn't do it.

If it has been done with no sighted assistance by a
totally
blind person
from scratch, then well done.

Jackie
