Well, I made my second run up north today. Despite Pete's optimism from what I saw two weeks ago and today, about 99% of the time there are no birds to be seen or heard. While the north woods is beautiful, it is VERY QUIET!!!! Here are the highlights. Along Hwy 55 on the way up in Menominee co. I had 7 Ruffed Grouse feeding along the roadside ("groups" of 2, 1, 3 and 1). The feeder just into Langlade co had standard feeder birds. Forest Roads 2183, 2414, 2182 and 2174 were covered for about 3-4 hours this morning. This is what I was able to find: a Mourning Dove by the Scott Lake area (go figure); 1 Pine Grosbeak and 1 Black- backed WP along Giant Pine Rd; 3 Blue Jays along 2182; a Pileated WP along 2174; and that was it. Not one chickadee, even Black- capped, or any thing else. And I moved slowly through this area, stopping often to walk and pish. Military Rd (2178) had a few things just north of 2182 that included a flock of 50 Pine Siskins and a few crossbills (both species). The one active feeder along there had standard feeder birds. (Along Hwy 32 north of Hiles, in Oneida co, a flock of 75 Pine Siskins were feeding along the shoulder of the road and in the adjacent trees.) The Three Lakes feeders had no birds, while old A bog had a Crow and a Raven. Two Northern Shrikes were seen on the way home, both along Hwy 45. One was north of Birnamwood and the other near Eland. When I left Three Lakes for home I had tallied 21 species for that part of the day. Several more were added on the drive home, including the aforementioned shrikes. As various birders have commented, including me, the north woods are very quiet this winter. Be prepared if you go up there. And good luck.
