I decided to check out the north woods, mainly in Forest county. The weather
was beautiful, especially considering what is coming the next series of days.
However the bird activity was similar to the several preceding year winter
tripsâunbelievably quiet!!! Any one considering checking out Argonne, Alvin
and Forest Roads 2182, 2183, etc. be forewarned! The few birds I did find were
a Canada Jay on 55 south of Alvin, 2 Boreal Chickadees near the Pine River
bridge and a female Pine Grosbeak on the 2182 road west of the Pine River
bridge. There are NO FEEDERS in Alvin, literally!!, thus no Evening Grosbeaks.
I cannot remember the last time I missed that species on this winter run.
Three Lakes had no feeders, and no trees with berries, thus not one bird. I
did find a few Ravens in Shawano and Forest counties, a Pileated WP in Shawano
co. and some Turkeys feeding on a field along 29 on the way back. This run
continues as the past several years with this probably being the all time
quietest, certainly in contrast to the many earlier years.
