(I did not realize that Tom P had spent the weekend up north until I just read it now.) Also interesting is a comparison between his sightings and what I found up there today. I covered Langlade co, Crandon (nothing), Argonne, Hwy 55 to Alvin and Alvin, FRs 2182, 2174, 2183, 2144, Three Lakes area and Eagle River (nothing), plus a quick run thru Rhinelander. Highlights included 1 Goshawk, 1 Black-backed WP, 4 Pileated WPs, 7 Gray Jays, 7 Ravens, 1 Boreal Chickadee, 15 Red-br. Nuthatches, 100+ Bohemian Waxwings, 7 Pine Grosbeaks, 3 Purple Finches, 7 Red Crossbills, 2 White-winged Crossbills, 40 Common Redpolls, 15 Pine Siskins and 65 Evening Grosbeaks. These were the sites that produced the above species: feeder just into Langlade co off Hwy 55 had 1 siskin, 1 raven and 1 Pileated WP, among others. Argonne feeders had Pine Siskins, 3 Purple Finches, and 15 redpolls. Hwy 55 north from there had 25 redpolls feeding on the shoulder plus 15 Evening Grosbeaks in a tree and a Goshawk further down the line. Alvin feeders (4th and Hall St and north end of Alvin) had 50 Evening Grosbeaks, 7 Red Crossbills, etc. Pine River crossing had 2 Gray Jays (we enjoyed my cookies together) and 1 Boreal Chickadee. 2174 bog south had 3 Gray Jays and 2 White-winged Crossbills. Scott Lake spot had a Black-backed WP, and Pileated WP. Three Lakes had Pine Siskins and 7 Pine Grosbeaks plus 2 more Gray Jays. The Bohemian Waxwings were in Rhinelander near the radio station (country). It was a beautiful day, starting cold (zero) but warming to mid 20s. There was NO wind (after Saturday's field trip hurray) with plenty of sun. The roads were great, although be a little careful of the FR roads, as they have quite a bit of ice with a little snow over it. While there is not a "rush" of winter finches due to a big irruption as some times occurs, this was certainly better than all last winter, and the weather was great. Good luck for any one going up there soon. Daryl Tessen Appleton, WI #################### You received this email because you are subscribed to the Wisconsin Birding Network (Wisbirdn).
