I spent the better part of today covering the north woods, mainly in Forest
county. The day was beautiful, with temps climbing from zero to 34. There was
no wind which was a real plus with total sun. The amount of snow in parts of
Langlade county and all of Forest county is unreal. There is probably over 2
feet on the ground and the amount of snow and ice on the roofs is also unreal.
Despite all the snow the roads were in excellent driving condition, even the
forest roads (2178, 2182, 2414 and 21830 although they are snow covered with
ice in places. I had no problems driving them. The problem was the lack of
birds. When i left Pine River all the way back to three Lakes and then 45 and
29 to Wittenberg I saw ONE bird---a Raven!!!
Fortunately there scattered birds before that which included Pine Siskins
(almost always 2 together), a Purple Finch along the shoulder of 55, also a
pair of Red Crossbills, Pileated WP in Argonne, 10 Ravens, a Canada Jay near
the 2178/2182 junction, a Ruffed Grouse on a side road in Langlade co., 2
Red-br. Nuthatches with another pair of siskins along 2182, and a Goshawk on
2183. However the best was in Alvin when 10 Evening Grosbeaks along with 10-15
Blue Jays were at the feeder on 1st Rd. And now this is the ONLY feeder in
Alvin. The one at the end of 4th Rd is no longer active, nor the one on the
north end of the town (has not been for several years).I sat and enjoyed the
two species at the feeder for some time. When I returned about 15 minutes
later, nothing was present. The feeder problem also exists in Langlade co.
where I discovered that several feeders that had been active for years, no
longer are!!
If you decide to try for birds in the north woods be prepared for seeing very
little but the scenery is great. Good luck.
