Sandy,

I don't have anything useful to add, but appreciate hearing your thought
processes with this new guy, as well as how you work with him. Mitzi =
was
young and impressionable enough at 7 months that I was able to work on =
her
guardiness early and in a less complicated environment simply as I =
worked on
teaching her calm and quiet as part of helping her manage her anxiety... =
 Or
maybe she taught me how to work with her on those things. We've needed =
to
review a few times at certain phases on her way to adulthood, but I must
have learned something because she seems to settle into her new "pack" =
role
without turning fierce protector. Whew! She has an interesting sense =
of
her responsibility in a pack role that is very noticeable when she =
passes a
maturity benchmark. I don't know if that makes sense, but she will go
through a very obvious change. It's always fun to observe while I'm
figuring out how to modify the training and socialization to mold the
emerging adult. I guess I need to start phrasing all of that in past =
tense,
since she's nearly 2 and should get to be pretty stable in her =
personality
over the next year.  Wow!

Anyway, different situation than you have with Zair, but it's good for
newbie me to see how the pros approach the behavior and go about =
assessing
its potential impact on a prospect's future work. Zair sounds so =
wonderful
otherwise that I'm pulling for both of you there. I think you're right =
to
watch and consider and get second opinions while you're watching. =
Whether
the issue at this point will become a future problem is so dependent on =
the
dog and your relationship with him, I think he has a good chance of
overcoming it with you and your pack to help him.

Wishing you the best!

Tami Smith-Kinney

Let me know if you'd like more details of the thoughts on the food =

Hmm. I just did the opposite this morning.. grin. When he snarked at =
one of

the other dogs coming too close,I snatched up his bowl and put it out of =
=20
reach, I put him in the bathroom for a time out for about 5 minutes. =
Since
he=20
does not guard when I play the shark feeding game with everyone, I =
thought
that=20
I would try handing out the food in handfuls.. I am feeding kibble right
now=20
because I cant find anyone to deliver my raw. That way , food comes when =
the

other dogs are around and are up there close and personal. .a little
classical=20
 conditioning.. No snarking, no growling, even when he vacuuming around =
and

under the other dogs.. I also ocassionally threw a handful of food into =
the

bowl on the floor.. I wonder if it is the bowl that is triggering this? =
My =20
resident dogs are not doing the initiating as they are aware of the fact
that =20
all of the food and resources are MINE. I wouldn't have tried this =
except
with =20
my pack and because the snarking is not escalating. If I let them free =
feed,

there is also not an issue except right as I put a new bag in. One of my
Danes=20
 has trouble keeping weight on , so I had been free feeding.. But Alex =
is=20
getting overweight so I wanted to switch back to portion feeding. for =
those
who=20
haven't heard about my shark feeding game, I line up the dogs and hand =
out=20
spoons of canned food or yoghurt or ice cream in the summer. It allows =
me
to=20
give supplements and meds to dogs that need them while reinforcing sits =
and

name recognition.. plus it is kind of fun.. Each dog has their own =
shark
name.. =20
grin..gotta have some people fun with it too..like you said hopefully he
will=20
 mellow out.. He does let me pick up and take food from him with no =
fuss.
