If you take a look at the corporate structure of many of the brand names you
will see that the parts, service, literature, customer relations, and
warranty fufillment are handled by a separately incorporated company, for
example Sony Service Company, Panasonic Service Company, Sanyo Fisher
Service Corporation. These companies are expected to make a profit for the
parent company or else---. These companies DO care about repairs, selling
copywrited literature, supporting service centers. But they have no control
over the product design or sales. They dont care what something sells for.
They just know they have to charge so much for a part or for service
literature to make the profit that they need to survive. If they decide to
set up distributors, there is a income windfall on parts sales as the
pipeline fills. Since the parent organization determines the cost to the
parts division, the price on the parts increases to cover the distributors
markup, and the parts division increases the prices to the service centers
to support the distributors.
A few of the brands do not handle these things through a separate
corporation. Their parts are not sold through distributors and the price of
their parts and literature is low compared to the others. Some distributors
do their own importing and buy the parts elsewhere, usually the country of
origin, to get around the domestic arrangements.
