John, That's what I was thinking too, mode switch is in the wrong place, but why would covering the sensor cause the TV to come on and stay on? I sort of recognize the VCR mechanical as being RCA. Does anyone have a mechanical re-alignment procedure/diagram? In the meantime I'm going to take this apart and clean/test the mode switch. I would suspect the mechanism gears are out of time, a common problem with these. There was a modification kit (RCA) 221066 with a couple gears and the basket side plate. BTW, that should be the same as a RCA 13TVR03/19TVR01, maybe someone has that service manual.
