I don't connect chipper check to the chassis on a ctc177. Instead I
remove the eeprom from the chassis and plug it into an adaptor I put
together which connects to the chipper check box. I tried the Thomson
method with clips and all, but on one of the first I did, a clip slipped off
while writing to the eeprom and corrupted it worse than it was. Also, the
un-powered chassis loads the clock and data lines somewhat, so I decided the
clip method wasn't a good idea.
The adaptor I made is simple, just a small perf board with and 8 pin DIP
socket, another connector to hook to the chipper check box and resistor.
The other connector goes to a 4 wire cable into the chipper check box to
ground, clock, data and +5 volts.
The only real difference is I pick up +5 volts from the chipper check
internally rather than having to use an external supply. This is easy to
find, since Thomson provides the schematic.
Sorry for the long post, but hopefully that will answer some questions
about this. I don't have diagrams or photos, but if there is interest, I
work on that.

| Jerry,
| I have bought the parts needed to make the leads for the connector.
| Did you purchase a clip for the EEPROM, if so where, or how do you attach
the
| wires to the EEPROM?

| Phil,
| I hate to state the obvious, but if your going to continue to service
| Thomson sets, you need to invest in chipper check. With it you can
| "reinitialize" the ctc177 series eeproms, which means accessing the
| locations in the eeproms that aren't accessible in the normal service
menu.
| On newer chassis (ctc195/7/203 etc), it's a must. On the 177 series, if
the
| other (i.e. service menu) values are corrupted, you will have to realign
the
| chassis anyway. Since I've had chipper check (about 5 years) I haven't
had
| to replace an eeprom. The way Thomson suggests you connect Chipper Check
to
| a 177 series chassis is painful, but there are better ways to do it. I
made
| an adaptor for those eeprom chips. I can supply more info if interested
| (sorry, I have no pictures of diagrams of this, just text)...

| | Not to drag this on,but I remember trying this.Probably didn't do the
| | right sequence, but all I managed to do was transfer the old corrupt
| | parameters to the new "blank" chip,so now I have two exact chips with
| | corrupt data.
| | How does it transfer the "good" data without also the bad?
