There has been a newer version released and that is the N97 Mini. It's a lot nicer and more stable. You can view a podcast about this new version of the N97 at 3lib.ukonline.co.uk/sshow/ -

Hi Pete,

Some excellent points there so thanks for that, I note from your previous posts you have a N97? didn't know it was talks supported, I know it doesn't have gps but seems a nice phone, what is the keyboard like?

Thanks much!

Alistair

Don't bother with the Iphone mate, yes it has built in speech/magnification but despite this it is not that blindy friendly! There are lots of reviews on the internet for it which have been done by blind people but the speech is not accurate enough and you will never get the support and functionality
from the accessibility functions that you would get from Nuance Talks &
Zooms and their associated resellers.

In addition to this, you can't have a spare battery as it's built in and not
changeable (and a lot of blind folks like to carry spare power with them)
plus it has always been behind on basics such as picture messaging, camera
spec, limited Bluetooth connectivity features etc etc, it may be getting
there but it's always lagged on silly things.

I'm not anti the Iphone so don't get me wrong, it's very slick but I
wouldn't suggest someone that is visually impaired choose this over a Nokia
with Nuance support. I know a lot of people with Iphones and they are not
the big deal they are made out to be :-) it's not a phone that you will have
and keep and use for years its more of a temporary "cool at the moment"
device

Hope this helps and doesn't come across as too anti the Iphone!

Cheers

Pete

Hi Jackie this is very helpful, thanks for taking the time, E mail is not
essential but the internet access is important to me. Will keep an eye open

for updates from Nuance on this, going the dreaded Christmas shopping
(dragged screaming) this weekend so will have a look at both IPhone and N86
in the shop.

Hi Alistair

I can vouch that the keypad and all other buttons on the N86 are excellent
from a non-sighted perspective. As regards Talks, and as discussed many
times on this list, it doesn't work properly with Email and Internet at
the
moment.

But the N86 is a cracking handset, and I wouldn't let that put you off
unless it is absolutely imperative that you need these applications right
now.

And, on the N86 theme, I got a nice pouch for mine the other day which
I've
been looking for now for some time. I can't use the phone in it, but what

I
bought is certainly ideal for keeping it clean and free from scratches.

I hope this helps.

Kind regards,

J

Hi folks,

Been in a bit of a dither over choosing a new phone, choice between either

a
iphone or a talks compatible Nokia. Can someone confirm that neither of
the
major screen readers for mobiles function fully with the n86? Or maybe
someone knows of a alternitive which will work with talks which is wy fy, has GPS on board and is a good music player, the n86 seems to be most of
these but also seems to be more of a digital camera than anything else
which
does put me off a bit. Anyone currently using the N86? is the keyboard as
good as the N82? going into town at the weekend to have a look but all
help
would be appreciated. Off list E mail is below.
