We are told that none of the people who voted yes on the Hunte
membership will change their votes. If that is true, I can only wonder
why reason and common sense seem to have eluded them. It is as plain as
can be that no one wants this man in our club except possibly a very few
people who may think there is something to gain personally from
associating with him. It has to be personal gain, because it is certain
that the GSDCA will only be harmed by allowing this membership to remain
in effect. There is no reason why Hunte's membership should have been
approved in the first place...threats of law suits, implied or in fact,
and insurance liabilities have all been blown away. Using the by-laws
as an excuse holds no water, either...the man stands for everything that
is anathema to the dog fancy.
The GSDCA has never had any criteria for membership other than "get
two sponsors." That requirement was removed some time ago, and no one
seems to really know why. As for a Code of Ethics, we've never had one
of those, either. This is not to say that one cannot be put into place,
and any member, new or long time, who can't comply should be expelled.
Other clubs put these Codes into effect after some members came in,
others had them in effect when new people applied, but in any case, it
doesn't seem to have been a problem. Either you behave as a responsible
dog fancier, or you don't.
The GSDCA has lost face, possibly irreparably, at this time...we are
the talk of the fancy. There are those who have always mocked clubs
with no criteria...but now, it's progressed way beyond that...we should
all be ashamed.
We are assured that "steps are being taken" to remedy this sad
situation. Those steps had best be running ones, not hesitant baby
steps...I don't believe the Hunte question will be resolved by wishful
thinking and "giving it time." If he is allowed to remain as a member,
I believe a lot of people will not rejoin the club when it is time to
renew. After all, even if people don't want "an elitist club," I doubt
they want to be associated with a club that has a member who represents
EVERYTHING bad in the dog world. Hunte and his membership should be
dirty words to each of us.
Get him out. As quickly as possible. We have no credibility as
a dog club while he is allowed to remain.
