In my experience, you can have a dog who can do both. I co-own a bitch who
has 100 BIS at all-breeds and 20 BOB at specialties. Ask Mary T. about
Kelli. She did both with great success. The difference is not in the dogs
but in the different concepts and conditions dictated by each event. One
event is only for GSD while the other event is for more than 145 breeds. One
is usually outdoors on grass while the other is usually indoors on mats.
One is judged by a specialty judge while the other is judged by an all
rounder. The size of the rings is quite different so you seldom see the
extended gait at an indoor show that you see at an outdoor show. There are
other differences between an all breed show and a specialty so when you add
them all up you can understand why there can be a divergence in placements
of a particular dog in each venue. Personally, I much prefer showing or
watching a specialty. I do not judge indoor shows on mats because I cannot
evaluate gait in such a confined space. I envy judges who can. D.D.
