As I am sure Helen will either agree or correct me for this, the white color
was included in the breed for showing until 1968.

So was the Mantle Great Dane.... until it was discovered
that Mantle (aka Boston-marked) dogs were sort of useful
to have around when breeding quality Harlequins. Any
parent club can change or amend its Breed Standard
whenever it wants and/or feels a definite need to. ;)
As to the health of all "white" dogs, let us not forget
that all white dogs are NOT the same. The gene for "white"
coat coloring takes several different forms, some of
which, contain a "semi-lethal" factor. The dark-eyed,
pigmented white GSD is decidedly not one of these.
