I think it's simpler than some would like to make it...
Entries are down, expenses are up. We must change the way we do things period.
I am not sure about everyone else, but to me the memories of the National are
not about the Venue or any dinner. Every National I have great memories of the
PEOPLE and the DOGS. It's the one time a year we all get together for a week
and share experiences & exciting moments, catch up with those from others parts
of the country, and simply enjoy each other's company while we watch the magic
happen in the ring with our amazingly beautiful and intelligent dogs. I don't
care if we have our Victory dinner or meetings at the show site, in a hotel, or
in a barn! We'll have a great time with each other. It's time to evolve and
we have choices now. So, let's make smart ones! Pretty soon there will be no
more choices, as they will be made for us and may not be pretty.
The club should also be engaging the younger generation in these conversations
as they are the ones who have the most to lose or gain. We actually have quite
a few younger folks with new fresh ideas, but they are often discarded or
ignored... and that is a shame...

think the most important question is why we are losing money at the Nationals.
t seems to be the one highlight of the year for so many. For me its to compete
gainst the best, to see dogs and their progeny from all over the US and Canada
n person; and to visit, and socialize with friends from all over the country.
believe the excitment of the national is far more then a regular show. I can
emember years back and they have stopped it now but in the beginning on BOB day
o have all the Champions both male and female come in the ring and they they
ll went out of the ring together. Use to bring goosebumps to see all those
wesome 100+ Champion German Shepherds together.
So why are we losing money?? Venues to high? Do we go outside (although I
on't know if it will hold the same atmosphere) but we have to do what we have
o do during these times. How will Obedience and Agility fare outside, I know
bedience show are held outside a lot but that Agility is prefered to be indoors
lthough they do have them outside too. Do we do away with a fancy victory
inner and room to hold it, although we pay to attend the dinner, what does it
over, just the food, the room? Is holding the herding off site adding to the
ost? Are there places we have been to that does make money. I thought I heard
hat Colorado made money. Just throwing things out there. I am curious as to
ow much money we are losing at the nationals and why. I would sure hate to see
ationals go away. But like everything else right now maybe its time to start
ightening the budget for the Nationals, look for ways to make the money not
ose it. We have this year, at least, gone
from an almost week long national for conformation to just 3 days. This should
e interesting seeing as though we have added a few more classes to be judged.
