We have had most live to 13 and 14 years. That seems more 'average' to me. IMPORTANT to me is... HOW do they live!? Are they healthy and sound and happy and full of strength and verve for their entire life....or... are some living to be 13 and 14 yrs. on medication and 'treatments' for health ailments...??? I would rather have a dog live a great healthy sound happy life to 9 or 10 years than just survive on heavy doses of medications and spending a lot of time at the Vets trying to diagnose problems. There may be some members of the 13 Club that have survived bloat...or have been 'tacked' to avoid bloat........?? Over many years we have lost three dogs at about 8 yrs. of age. One had cancer of the salivary glands......and we had to put her down as the surgery did not solve it. We will never know if it was because she chewed up a bunch of insulation as a puppy ...that we had temporarily stored while building. We lost one recently at 8 yrs....and he never had a bad day in his life until the day before we lost him. Frank checked on him late at night as he had been unusually quiet that day as he followed us around. HE seemed fine then. Next morning he was gone. We also lost one at about 9 yrs. He had gone through a horrific case of pnuemonia and collapsed lung from a massive lung infection from a foxtail embedded in his lung the year before. Without extensive and expensive necropsies there is often no way of pinpointing exact cause.... Could the above mentioned deaths be due to 'inbreeding'...or maybe it would not have happened had they not been all American Bred? Does everyone know exactly why their dog died?? Wouldn't it be wonderful if there was a place you could go to list your dogs passing with pedigree, reason for death and age. We would learn so much. We have the 13 club but where is a list of those dogs that made it? Best kept secret of Parent Club. I don't bother to apply for a certificate. I know how long my dogs have lived. I have one now that is 14.4 years. Most of the dogs that I bred using those blood lines made it to 13. No illness to speak of they just seem to run down like an old clock. If you talk dogs with folks in the conformation ring age span is the least important thing. They are much more impressed with wins than with life span. we are getting what we bred for. Finished by 2 years and dead by 7. I know how hard it is to lose a member of the family as I considered my dogs just that. When I lost my first GSD I owned to Hemangiosarcoma I let others know by Yahoo Internet groups. I did not belong to any of the groups at the time so it was the main reason I joined them. I wanted to find out if any others had heard of Hemangiosarcoma. Barbara Williams was very kind as were several others in the groups. I freely gave my GSD's pedigree to anyone that asked for it. I do believe with my years of researching this is inherited be it directly or by the fact the immune system is weak. In my GSD's case he had a great immune system as he was never sick a day in his life except one year & 5 months for one day before I lost him the disease. One of my vets thought he had bloat at the time but not the case since he improved with lasting effect. He could eat any greasy food available, etc. with no problems. He was American and German lines and since I have found several dogs with the same lineage that have died from Hemangiosarcoma. Breeders and Owners need to understand it is only going to get worst unless they understand the bottleneck in the American lines today. There needs to be some out-crossing of Euro GSD's of lines not of what has been line-bred and inbred off of for years. There is more to breeding and owning a GSD than Championships and Titles. The general public are moving away from GSD and the AKC Shows prove this to be fact. The last AKC Show I attended I was told by a person that was the breeder of the Australian Cattle Dogs that she is selling dogs now to people that use to own GSD's. The health issues and conformation is turning people away. Just take a look at the AKC Shows and compare the other breeds number that are showing. The last Speciality Show I attended there was a American-German GSD that did very well in the class so yes they can win. I had a AKC judge I talked to at a show tell me that she would no longer place GSD's with incorrect conformation as others are feeling the same.
