I agree the book "Pukka's Promise is a excellent book. The problem with genetics is if the disease is there it will surface when least expected through the hidden genes. All GSD's are related to the dogs in the past that died from the diseases we have today. The book is sub-titled "The Search for Longer-lived Dogs," and the research he's done is admirable. Because of his book, I changed Abby's feeding entirely -- and approximately three-four months later, she is no longer shedding buckets year round, her coat and weight are great, and her pee doesn't burn my lawn. Not biggies, I'll admit, but I see them as indicators of improved nutrition. I lost Kane at 7 of esophageal cancer; I lost Cinder at 8 and Luke at 10.5 of Hemangiosarcoma, something I'd never heard of (and I read A LOT) that is very prevalent in GSDs. Luke and Cinder were only distantly related. In my mind, cancer is our biggest enemy.
