Thank you Jim and all of you who have expressed support for the Amateur
Futurity. Did you read what the young lady said? How much FUN she had
handling, how much she LEARNED, even about GROOMING ? Many that were
originally opposed due to false impressions of extra work, time, and money
have seen the benefits - encouraged, NEW to the ring people, possibly
future guardians of our breed, who derived PERSONAL joy and experience from
the Amateur. Are we so inundated with new young members that we can don't
need to give encouragement and provide a different opportunity ?

As for inserting an AMATEUR CLASS into the regular Futurity - would not the
winner of the amateur have to compete against the pros in the final
analyses? What is the point then? The idea of NOT COMPETING WITH THE PROS
IS 'OUT THE WINDOW' These amateurs want the opportunity of a level playing
field. When was the last time anyone saw a Best In or Best Opposite take
the honor with a non - pro on the end of the lead? Please tell me.

This Amateur event was initially to be a 3 year trial at the end of which an
evaluation was to be given to see if it appealed to any 'standing on the
sidelines watching' or brought 'new faces to the ring'. If there are no
trials there can be no evaluation. From the beginning Clubs REFUSED TO EVEN
TRY - DISPITE THE FACT WE NEED NEW COMERS TO THE SPORT.
SO NOW, Carol Moore has taken the bull by the horns and said " everyone,
lets AT LEAST TRY' on a national basis and see if it HELPS. IF IT DOESN'T
HELP THROW IT OUT THE WINDOW FOR GOOD!!!!!

Now, I and a few others tried to convince the Board, last year, to have the
winners of the Amateur compete at the National in the regular
Futurity/Maturity finals - the motion failed - the National judging takes
too long now and to add a couple of people in that big ring is, in my
opinion, foolish.

I don't get all the griping over the Amateur Futurity. The extra work
thing is just bogus imo. The ring is already set up, a few extra
ribbons have to be ordered, etc. On the positive side, it's a chance
for someone to get ring stewarding under their belt for a judging
license. It is also an opportunity for a person judging the amateur
to pick one (or is it two in the case of a specialty of their own
breed) matches toward their license as well. It gives the young dogs
a chance to get a feel for the ring and another training opportunity
(for a lousy fifteen bucks). It gives non-professionals another
chance to work on their chops. Besides all that I like having any
chance to watch young GSD's in the ring. I am an amateur (I have
finished ten of my own) and I will be sixty-three. I am grateful and
lucky to have good health and can still run and you will see me out
there with a couple of my pups. I am always glad for the chance to
get in the ring especially in front of my GSD peers. Also, If the dog
and I are a fit I will be glad to handle anyone's dog for them in the
amateur in my region (NW). Jim Barnhart
