Each Dog is a UNIQUE Individual with a Unique Set of Conditions and Needs, and Each Decision to "Put down" or " Place" has to be considered with that in mind. Some Can Make it fine ....and Some can't...for Various reasons ...Age..Health..Adaptibility.. Etc... Then here are certain rare, ONE MASTER Dogs..they do not ever stop grieving. They may survive but are always searching and looking for that Master, to come for them...They are never ever the same, and can never be truly Content, Happy Joyful Companions...A Big Part of their Heart is gone...They are often depressed and eat only enough to survive so they can keep seeking that Master.. . I bought a Corgi and when I got her she was 7 months old and was inconsolable..Did not want to eat and was always searching to find the Breeder/Owner she adored and left behind in New Zealand... I called the Breeder and asked, 'What in the World can I do for her? Perhaps I should just send her home, she is so unhappy.. ?' ." She answered." Because she is So YOUNG...Just keep being kind and loving and caring and she will come around, because Young Corgi's are very OPTIMISTIC!!!' I just lost her, my Little Corgi Love ,' Bo Bo,' , not long ago, when she was 14 and 1/2 to a heart problem... We both loved each other dearly and SO enjoyed our time together... But if she had been Older, perhaps she would have lost much of her Optimism.. So it is always an Individual decision based exculsively on Each particular Dog . I do not believe One blanket decision fits all... Readjusting takes time to accomplish, if it is indeed possible ...and Lots of Patience and Lots of Optimisim on both sides.. Some people and Some dogs are not able to give what is required to make that transition. It is up to each of us to know that and make responsible decisions for what is truly best for Each of our Companions..when we die.. No one knows your Dog better than you who have devoted yourself to it's everyday well-being of Body, Heart and Spirit..That Dog in turn knows no one better than you, to whom they have given their Body , Heart and Spirit..in perfect trust and Confidence.. That is why I still have two 9 year Shepherds (one purchased at 2 years of age, and had to be spayed early on,never had a litter, and one Male, purchased at 8 weeks of age, who had 5 fractures of his pelvis from being stepped on as a newborn and still going strong) _ and A Standard Schnauzer who will be 14 and is a demanding Monkey! I never found anyone I felt confident to place them with over the long years, and they have all been hale and hearty and full of life and Gusto!! ..So we are all still traveling together, along with Our Nero who will be 8 years old the 1st of June and Bellavia who was 4 in September 2005... Doyle is 80 and I just turned 76... So hopefully we will all continue on together until we have all passed away...from Old Age...I have made my arrangements for each of them... and feel confident it is the right one.. and Pray it is...
