Well, once again, here's a response to only part of a post. If you read
what I wrote, I said SOME dogs were to be put down--not all. The ones
she'd asked to have put down were old dogs, and I think she was
concerned that they would go to kennel situations and not into private
homes as pets, since they were old and in some cases, not in the best of
health. Keep in mind, please, that Corgis often live to be 15 or more
-- quite a few make it to nearly 20. At least, they used to.
The breedable dogs and bitches were left to private individuals, by
name, and these were people that particular breeder had worked closely
with for a number of years. If the State had not found the will
invalid, the dogs would all have been disposed of as she desired. As it
turned out, not one went to the right place, and instead of being able
to continue contributing to the good of the breed, they were wasted.
For whatever reason, there are people to whom many of us would not
sell a dog or provide a stud service...but these people might end up
with our dogs if we haven't made some provisions that we are sure will
be carried out. And regardless of how silly you think it is, or how
trivial, to some people bloodlines are VERY important. IWith those
Corgis, one dog she had asked be put to sleep was sold instead to Canada
- some of us knew he'd been sterile for almost 2 years when his owner
died--he was past 12 at the time...suddenly the Canadian who wound up
with him was claiming all sorts of litters from the dog. This was in
the days before DNA - in fact, they weren't even using DNA in court
cases with humans at the time.
There's also the matter of care, and as everyone else has said, how
the dogs feel...I know every dog that lives here at the moment would
miss me, but they'd adjust...but I've had dogs that would not have adjusted.
Anyway, it doesn't matter what anybody else thinks, if an individual
decides that upon their death, their dogs should be put to sleep, for
whatever reason, be it protecting a bloodline (and thereby a part of the
entire breed), trying to keep the dogs from ever ending up in a rescue
situation, or whatever, it's their business, not anyone else's.
