Rollei has always claimed that the HFT process is different from the Zeiss
"T*" multi-coating, but the truth is more prosaic. "T*" was developed as a
joint project by Carl Zeiss and Asahi and it was shared between these two
firms. When Rollei purchased Voightländer out of the wreck of Zeiss Ikon,
they got the right to share the process but were denied the use of the "T*"
trademark, so they came up with HFT as a substitute. Rollei does their own
coating and has done so for decades but they use the Zeiss process, though
they modify the chemical composition as they see fit, meaning that a given
lens made in Oberkochen in one mount or in Kyocera in Contax RTS mount or
in Braunschweig will be identical in design but may have differently shaded
coatings.
