I'll bet Vulcanite could have been used in place of the tiles on the space shuttle! My second hand double stroke M3 (nearly mint except for the first owners SS# and nickname [Peanuts Warner]) had a few small pieces of Vulcanite missing. I used brown lizard from Cameraleather to replace it and haven't regretted it.

I think that Vulcanite was Leica's worst innovation. But I never thought ofit as plastic. It seems more like rubber or asphalt. I have two Leicas withdecent vulcanite on them (chunks haven't started to fall off yet). Yet,people would rather try to fix it rather than just stripping it all off andputting alligator skin on it.
