Hello Don,

geschreven:

I recall that in The Netherlands light switches were turned on by flipping
them down instead of up.

I believe you are right but most of the tumbler switches have gone now. Our
house is from the late Seventies and our original switches are being operated
by pushing a rectangular plate. Pushing the upper part is ON and the lower part
OFF. In the Fifties when I was a kid we had switches that had to be turned.
They had a round brown bakelite housing. Then came the tumblers and now the
push-plates.

Also, if I remember correctly (It's been a while) that a lady wearing a ring
on her left hand was engaged, moving it to the right hand when married.

Well I suppose you only had an eyes for the ladies. :-)

The same goes for men BTW but only for Protestants and non-religious people.
Roman Catholics wear the ring on the left hand when they are married and on the
right when engaged. Nowadays hardly anyone takes the trouble of officially
engaging.

We have a couple of Dutch folks on the list, they can correct me if I have
remembered incorrectly.

A Happy Christmas from the Low Countries to all on The List,

Ferdi.
