As a teenager who gets both sides of the church music coin, I still feel
that in a worship service (noram sunday am etc) that the organ WITH drums
and piano, and a bass, and a guitar (ours is an acoustic electric) is a
great combonaion. For example while singing All Hail the Power of Jesus'
Name, the band alone can't get that feeling and sound needed to lead this
hymn. Yet on a hymn like Victory in Jesus, the addition of drums and piano
etc add something that the organ can't do by itself. On a Praise and Worship
chorus like Agnus Dei, the organ can provide, this time in an accomp role, a
foundation that is lacking in th band. The organ can survive if we want it
to. The organ may not always need to be the lead instrument, on the other
hand, the organ doesn't always need to be in the backround. As organists we
need to learn to be more open minded to new forms of music. We also can't
forget the great old music either. I am constantly baffled as to why so many
organists feel threatened by praise and worship. Find ways to add the organ
to these songs. For example on a great new song Let my Words be Few, I
generally choose use Flutes 8 1-1/3 and Flute Celeste and chord, providing a
nice foundation for the song. We can't play everything on a Principal
chorus. To anybody who can make sense out of this rambling, I congratulate
you.
