You are correct, for windows xp, if you've got more than a gig, you can
safely turn off pf. For vista, more than 3gb. For win7, 2gb for 32bits, 4 or
more for 64bits.
Turning off the pf competely is the way to go, do this by going to
system>advanced, then performance>memory, uncheck the automatically manage
paging file box, then highlight the main drive, then set it to "no paging
file" from the 3 radio buttons.
In XP, just go to system>advanced>Paging file, and select the radio button
after highlighting the correct drive.
If you must use a paging file, another good way to speed up is to set an
actual size, a fixed number, as oppose to letting the OS manage it...

I heard the page file slows down a daw, so I selected zero as page file
size, and my new machine really seemed to go faster afterward.
I've read that the page file was only good if you have not enough ram, since
the hard drive is so much slower than ram.
I think it's true, since I tried sselecting zero for the page file on my
slow old machine, with inadequate ram onboard, and it got much slower, so I
had to revert to the original page file size, then it speeded back up to
what it was.
