Bob, greetings,

Rob had mentioned “Yes, this is more or less what I am seeing. It isn't the
way the head is supposed to work though! I was told that placing a yellow
filter (cc40y?) between the head and the neg stage will give you performance
as expected, i.e. soft and hard at max should be close to grade 2, but I
haven't tried it yet.”

I ran the test to verify what he was told, and yes the maximum soft and hard
setting did in fact produce a grade 2. With out the filter addition these
settings produced ES.78 effective grade 4 shot toe.

 Coincidently when looking for a cc40y filter I found a cc30y filter I had
removed in the Zone VI Non VC cold light head.

The plotted curves from this test were distorted in the toe with quite an
abrupt hump. The results without the filter were much smoother. I would
normally rerun this test changing the exposure time for the added filter. I
did not do this because I was studying the differences between having a
filter and not.

DEAR JONATHAN,
The 40 Y filter is supposed to be used with single tube NON VC cold
light heads to bring the contrast to about #2. You can then vary CP filters
between the head and the neg or CC filters beneath the lens to get something
approximating your needed contrast.
It is NOT supposed to be used with VC cold light heads for the reason
you have discovered.
            CHEERS!
                  BOB

I retested the Zone VI type 1 VC Head with a cc40y filter, using Ilford RC
CV IV paper and as I suspected the cc40y filter attenuated the blue so that
the Hard Maximum - Soft Minimum setting yielded the maximum ES of .83 which
is about Grade 3.75
Soft Maximum Hard Maximum setting's yield was ES1.08 effective grade 2
normal toe.
Soft Maximum - Hard Minimum setting's yield was ES 1.50 effective grade 0
short toe. The rest of the curves followed an even decline to ES .83 with
setting Soft Maximum - Hard C,D,E setting's each yielding an ES of 1.3

I might retest with a cc20y filter to see if a higher paper grade is
obtainable without sacrificing the grade 0 results.

I will retest with a cc40y when I get a chance. I wonder if the addition of
the cc40Y filter might attenuate the blue to the point it could cause some
problems with obtaining grade 4 or grade 5?

Yes, the is more or less what I am seeing. It isn't the way the head is
supposed to work though!

I was told that placing a yellow filter (cc40y?) between the head and the
