If taking the photo from above the surface, then what
happens is that the light from the bottom is bent such
that what you see as the bottom is acutally the bottom
in a region closer to you than it appears.   Because
of this, if you have an object like a boat, the
portion of the boat beneath the water will appear much
shallower than it is in fact.   From below the surface
total internal reflection happens and you get the type
of split image that my friend created.
