I would recommend a folding field camera for what you have described. 
For Portraiture a 240mm lens.  Modern lenses have a PC connection for
strobe. A field camera will run around 4-6 lbs. metal monorail 10-30
lbs. or more.  Your should look at the Shen Hao or the Tachihara.  For
more money look at the Zone VI. As for the tripod, if it's not one of
the bottom of the line models, it should be able to handle a light
weight folder.  The only real concern would be in windy conditions.
