you also might want to check that you put the bulk film on the spool so  
it's flowing straight into the light trap and now in an over/under  
fashion.  I think on the Alden you have to put the film in so it looks  
like it's rotating counter clockwise up into the light trap...

If you put it on clockwise, it has to make a u-turn into the light trap  
and that might cause friction and slipping.
