This is unrelated to the problem of large format focussing, but last winter I used a laser pointer to assist in calibrating the rangefinder in my beater Kiev. I shone the laser through the viewfinder (the Kiev has a combined viewfinder/rangefinder window) and converged the resulting two dots by turning the focussing knob, then read the distance from the camera to the "subject" (the wall where the laser dots were reflected). While not super-accurate, it did get me in the ballpark.
