I've been using Barry Thornton's developers for a long time. They are pyrocatechol based developers. Before Barry, I used a highly compensating Windisch pyrocatechol formula with great success.

This sounds really great. But, isn't it pretty toxic too? Don't you have to be more careful than with ordinary developers?

I've never been sure if the toxicity of developers like Pyrogallol and its derivatives and para phenelyne diamene refer to skin sensitivity or to actual toxicity (i.e., they kill you dead). I rather think the former. Metol is also a common sensitizer causing some people to develop very serious rashes. There are not many chemicals used in conventional photography which acutely toxic but its still a good idea to keep them off your skin and out of your mouth.
