Except > for the highlight contrast reduction effect there are > probably not many virtues to these developers now. ..one thing about staining developers Richard forgot to mention is the fact that the stain acts as an added density in the UV region, meaning that when you are into alt printing (Platnium, Kallitype, Cyanotype etc.) you can use your negatives for both alt and silver gelatine (normally an negative for alt. requires (much) higer densities than for SG). Works pretty good in my experience, but the purists still persue special negatives for each printing process, but increasingly inkjet negatives are employed for that..
