Catechol stain is linear on paper because it is "brown" and is "seen" by the
paper as ND --- even on VC papers.  

This is not the same as pyrogallol; pyro's stain is green/yellow which
affects local contrast on VC papers.

There's no "non linear" effect on graded papers.
