Well, the very next book has a Helghast in it that Lone Wolf might release from 
captivity.  Assuming this is done, Book 3 asks if you have the Sommerswerd.  If 
you do, you can fight the Helghast, if not it automatically kills you.  The 
thing is that there is no way to gain and keep the Magic Spear without gaining 
and keeping the Sommerswerd, which is by far the better Item.  All of the 
following books assume that if you don't have the Sommerswerd, you also don't 
have the Magic Spear.
