Perhaps you're right -- I was just thinking of the scenario where my 
password is on the server instead of my computer.  Anyone could connect and 
get at it if they knew how.

Why would that be less secure than the cookie carrying the password? A
cookie can be interrogated and decoded or copied from your computer easily
either way.
