Gman,

I went back and searched for the link you sent to me and looked at the price 
of this memory as opposed to what I paid today.  Can you go here for me and 
tell me if $76.00 is the price for two sticks of memory, each being 1 gig? 
If so I really got ....**.

Unless there is some kind of big difference between the two brands.

    Translated, this means that you have 4 slots that can handle up to 1GB
of DDR (dual data rate) non-ECC memory each for a max of 4GB.  The sweet
spot for XP has shown itself to be 2GB, so the board supports that.  The
ideal speed you should be running is PC3200 which runs at 400Mhz.

    The board also supports dual-channel memory which means that you should
ideally have matched pairs of RAM sticks installed into the proper memory
slots in order to take advantage of that technology.  Specifically, a
matched set of 1GB sticks installed into slots 1 & 3 or slots 2 & 4 would
allow 2GB in dual-channel mode.  Any other combiniation of slots would force
the board back into single-channel mode which is how it's running right now.
Also, adding a single stick to any slot would also disable dual-channel,
even if you already had dual-channel running.  For example, a matched pair
in slots 1 & 3 gives you dual-channel operation, but if you then add a
single 1GB stick to slot 2, the system would then revert back to
single-channel mode.  Single-channel mode does not hurt the system, but
dual-channel provides a lot of benefits.  So, my recommendation would be for
you to buy a matched set of PC3200 DDR sticks like any of the sets shown in
the link below (they are ALL rated as appropriate for your Dell Dimension
4600 system).
