I'm assuming you mean, if you just put in 1 GB, will the hardware =
reserve
some RAM.

From what these tech articles explain, and from what I've seen, up to =
2GB of
RAM, it'll all show up and be used by the OS. "Excess" would be defined =
as
beyond 2GB. So, once you install over 2 GB, that's when the hardware =
starts
grabbing for itself. The more OVER the 2GB, the more it takes.

I'd be interested to know who on this list has exactly 3GB of RAM =
installed.
If I can ask you for a favor, let me know what shows up in SYSTEM =
PROPERTIES
at the bottom, where it lists the RAM. (right-click MY COMPUTER, =
PROPERTIES,
GENERAL TAB, on the bottom).

On a side note, in Windows, by default, any application or process can =
only
access a maximum of 2GB of total memory. If an application or process
accesses MORE than 2GB, the application or process will immediately get
terminated by the OS. But, this is an OS setting, and can be changed, =
and
hence this is what is referred to as the 3GB switch. Do a Google search =
for
"3GB switch" for more info if you want.

I don't claim to understand it all. It is very technical indeed. =
Confuses
the heck outta me, to tell you the truth. But, I do know that if I can
afford 4GB's of memory in a 32-bit OS, I'd do it in an instant. You =
probably
won't reap any true benefits from going from 3GB to 4GB, though I feel
comfortable having the max that the OS can technically address, even if =
it
doesn't see it all.

I'll rephrase...

Will the hardware still reserve some memory even if there is no excess =
RAM=20
installed?
