What kind of format is it trying to do? The floppy is not going to be happy with the NTFS format XP uses. Most likely it is FAT12 (or is it 16)? You may also have a faulty media problem on the disk. Try a couple. Also, put in a ready formatted one and see if the drive reads it correctly.
