Hello, Jeroen,The Blu-Ray players in question, including the Philips, have NTSC composite and S-Video outputs, therefore they must be able to properly format content for a 4:3 screen, no?
It appears that the Blu-Ray format allows the content producer to force a display mode, overriding any display preferences set by the user. In this case, the DVD is forcing a letterboxed display of the pillar boxed image, resulting in a forced postage stamp (sometimes called a picture framed) image on a 4:3 display.

Hello again,
But what is apparently not possible is to play a BluRay (= HDTV) disc on a BluRay player to any 4:3 display, be it SD or HD. To put it simply: that is not a valid use case for BluRay. Get a 16:9 HDTV display. (Or 21:9)
