Related word stories have come out great this year.

In groups of 2 or 3 if necessary, the first student writes down a
vocabulary word. The next one writes down a related word, passes the
notebook back to student one who writes down another related word. I stop
them about 2 minutes or so. They generally have 6 to 10 vocab words. I
then have them write a story. The first vocab word is in the first line
and then the second line of the sentence has the second vocab word and so
on. These end up being rather good because the flow of the vocab is
natural and not contrived.
