legs. Hovering into the north wind, just above eye level, north of picnic

- Comments: "This was an all grayish longspur, smaller than nearby larks. I
was scanning the flock of Horned Larks, and had gotten through 52 of them,
when I spotted a smaller bird mixed in. The birds were fairly close, maybe
20 meters away, and in good sunlight. It was significantly smaller, similar
in bulk to a pipit, but less lanky and more crouched over. It stayed
hunkered close to the ground, hence I couldn’t see the feet. What
immediately struck me was the all sandy grayish-brown upperparts and head,
with slightly paler underparts. It was a very pale bird, similar in
coloration to the palest of the female Horned Larks.
The upper breast was dirty grayish and had very faint blurry grayish
streaks; there was no black breast marking. The back had dark streaks that
were very messy, leading almost to a scalloped look. The supercillium was
narrow and pale brown, not wide and creamy like Lapland; the crown was
dark, the head small and rounded, and it had a partial brown auricular
patch that contrasted only moderately, and wasn’t dark or narrow enough for
Lapland. It didn’t seem to have much of an eyering, if any. The throat and
breast lacked any blackish markings; it lacked any malar markings. The
short triangular bill was very small and pale gray. The bird seemed
short-tailed and short winged. It had pale grayish brown coverts, with a
hint of a wingbar and no chestnut or rich brown color. I watched it for
about 3 minutes through the scope in direct comparison to Streaked Horned
Larks. It stayed feeding the same spot without flushing, walking only about
5-10 feet during the duration of my observation; at one point all of the
larks flew, but it stayed put. Even when alert, it seemed small and
small-headed.
Oscar and Hendrik also looked at it through the scope and were able to pick
it up with binoculars, too. Eventually the bird flew off with the giant
flock of larks and pipits, but we listened closely and no longspurs were
vocalizing. Lapland can be ruled out because it was more uniform
sandy-brown and not dark enough, had too small of a bill and was smaller
and smaller-headed, had a slightly more muted face pattern, lacked buff on
the face or upper breast, and was paler on the back and wings. The Lapland
I saw in the same flock was also very pale, yet differed in pattern and
build. McCown’s would have a larger bill and more muted pattern overall,
including plainer breast and more uniform auricular patch. I was very
excited to pick out this bird – a state lifer for me, though I’ve seen a
couple since moving to the Bay Area. This could be the same bird seen in
the area last winter. It seemed slightly more strongly marked on the face,
but possibly that was due to the good lighting, which brought out the
contrast nicely; the Lapland seemed muted at first, but then more darkly
marked with a more contrasting face pattern when it turned into the sun."
