Darrel et al,
I've heard Short-eared Owl give a "barking" call when they are flying --
like a dog bark.
I've heard the vibrato call from Pygmy Owls when they are agitated. If I
get a bird answering me, I do that call and it seems to get them stirred up.
"Them's fightin' words"
I've called in Saw-whet Owls with a tape and got them near me. Then I shut
the tape off and engage with them vocally, I.e. I toot/whistle. Whatever
they say, I say back. I don't speak owl, so I don't know what I'm saying,
but it seems to get them stirred up. That sometimes leads to a screeching
attack toward my head.
I don't do this in a prolonged sequence. The aim is to help someone who
hasn't seen the species see the species. Then I let the bird go back to its
own life.

Maybe I need to clear the cobwebs from my brain. I have seen Northern Pygmy
Owls use this call during flight on many occasions, and simply forgot, when
asking the question. I guess I was only thinking of larger owls, and Wayne
has answered that question. Thanks to all who replied. I would still be
interested to hear any other reports from people, who have heard other
species of owls calling in flight.
