Tue. Jan 12, I joined Lowell Franks on his ECAS Ft. Rock Raptor Survey. We
drove 77 miles in 6hr. 45 min. under cloudy skies with 0 - 15 mph SE winds and
temps between 30 and 41 degrees F. It was the day of the jackrabbits which
also made it the day of Eagles. The ground around Ft. Rock was covered with
2-8 inches of snow. This seemed to concentrate the jackrabbits around the hay
sheds which also concentrated the number of Eagles, mostly Bald. The areas
around the hay sheds had signs of many rabbit kills either from shooting or
predation, probably both. We ended up with 50 Bald and 16 Golden Eagles on the
route.
We ended up with a total raptor count of 201 which is the 3rd highest for the
11 years of the survey.
Raptors counted:
Red-tailed Hawk-----------------------70
American Kestrel-----------------------4
Northern Harrier-----------------------1
Bald Eagle----------------------------28A, 22S
Golden Eagle--------------------------16
Rough-legged Hawk---------------------51
Ferruginous Hawk-----------------------6
Prairie Falcon-------------------------2
Great-horned Owl-----------------------1
