I joined Lowell Franks today, 2/8, on his ECAS Fort Rock Raptor Survey. We
drove 79 miles under clear skies, calm winds and temperatures between 27 and 63
degrees F. The day started out with a bang. Before I got to Lowell's house I
turned on to the Ft. Rock Cave Rd. and when I got to the first irrigated field
I saw more cows on the back end of the field than I have ever seen there
before. I grabbed my binos for a look see and they were not cattle. They were
elk, somewhere between 200 and 300 or more, I couldn't count them they were so
thick and about a mile away. We also saw 6 Coyotes, and FOY Horned Larks for
both of us. We ended up with a Raptor count of 143 as follows
Red-Tailed Hawk -----------------50
American Kestrel --------------- 4
Northern Harrier --------------- 4
Bald Eagle --------------------- 11A, 4S
Golden Eagle ------------------- 15
Rough-legged Hawk -------------- 40
Ferruginous Hawk --------------- 3
Unident. Buteo ----------------- 3
Prairie Falcon ----------------- 7
Cooper's Hawk ------------------ 1
Great Horned Owl --------------- 1
Total --------------------------143
I am going to do the Christmas Valley Raptor Survey on Wed. and the
Bend-Alfalfa Raptor Survey on Fri. and have room for 1 or 2 riders on each day.
If you are interested in joining me give me a call.
