Yup...there's a lot like that. They just program around the issues. I knew
this stuff, but didn't realize the magnitude of the situation until I was in
a meeting with a really cool guy who opened up to us about a lot of issues.
He provided some real inside info about the decision process on
changes/modifications and it kinda blew me away (and made me REALLY glad I
wasn't a project manager there!<eg>). When millions of people have their
livelihood and mission critical issues relying on what you do...it's an
awesome responsibility! The level of legacy code is pretty incredible. And
being a developer I can appreciate how it gets to that level.

And despite what some folks think...they DO care about their customers.
Maybe TOO MUCH, which is part of the problem. It's like a government...all
these groups lobbying their positions. Ewwwww! Can you imagine trying to
accomplish ANYTHING when you have a bazillion people telling you how to do
your job!<shivers>

Dian

Well said.

Absolutely true.

Many large companies simply will not update because of the huge learning
curve in training several thousands users to learn a new version.

I know one large (very large) company here which still uses Windows 95 for a
lot of its people.
