  If you delete NORMAL.DOT Then you need to be sure to delete
  the correct one.... the one that WORD looks at when it opens.

  If the computer is on a network maybe the NORMAL.DOT is coming from there.
  it ould also be that to avoid students altering things, the administrators
  have set things up to copy from a network directory to a local directory
  when logging on.

  It could be that the student is set up to have her own network directories
  as well.

  1) Check drive mappings and see which drives look at where
  2) Ask the network people what happens when you log on.
  2) Check which is the default directory.
