Jim, I get it. I just don't have any conflicts like that. I can see it's really helpful, though. The reason I use the windows key program winkey is because this way I avoided conflicts with other programs. As for the Windows key assignment program, that sounds nice. Personally, I do have a normal hotkey for launching Outlook Express, just an ordinary control shift plus a letter key. No hassle. But I'm sure it's nice to have an alternative way to set up different sorts of hotkeys, too. what was that you said about a Jaws list of running apps? Is that the Jaws key plus one of the F keys? Or...? thanks. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jim Grimsby Jr." <jimgrims@xxxxxxxxxxx> To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Sunday, May 13, 2007 8:05 PM Subject: RE: A convenient alternative to Alt Tab Hi this must be a local short cut on your own personal system as I can not reproduce the function you describe. And I agree yardbird there are many way to do things and talking about them here or on other lists of this nature helps we jaws and blind users become power users who can get jobs done just as quickly as our sighted pairs. With that goal in mind I must call to your attention a program call winkey. It can be found at the jfw lite web site http://www.jfwlite.com/programs What this feature does is allows you to use the win key as a prefix key to assign windows commands or programs to the window key pluss letter combo. An example I set windows key o for ms outlook xp and never have to go run the program short cut again. Very nice way to get things done. -----Original Message----- From: jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Yardbird Sent: Sunday, May 13, 2007 7:27 PM To: jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Re: A convenient alternative to Alt Tab Allen, I completely agree with you. the most important thing in using a computer in today's world is to know you have freedom to do things in many ways, and only an enemy would hate such freedoms,. So let us remember that there are a million ways to get things done in Windows, and return to Jaws, where, thankfully, there are fewer ways to do stuff. Personally, I open Windows Explorer by pressing control shift x, and it opens right on local drive c:, with the drive already open! So there we have three methods, already, and let us be thankful for such plentitude. All best, yardbird, sometimes called yard Bird, as if he was from a family named Bird and his first name was yard. Which is fine. There's a million ways to be called, I always say. Just so's you answer. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Allan Wong" <allanwkf@xxxxxxxxx> To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Sunday, May 13, 2007 6:38 PM Subject: A convenient alternative to Alt Tab hi friends, should we drop this topic? every computer user have their own way to use the windows. some of you may like to use WinKey+e for windows explorer but as for myself, i may prefered going WinKey+the manual way that is going through the my computer icon at the desktop. so, i don't see any reason to make this thred any longer since it is not jaws related also. sorry guys. You mean with just your left hand? Somehow locate the left windows key with your thumb or something, and hit the tab key with your little finger? That would require eargue me to use my right hand to position my left hand before I could do it. LOL. Seriously, though. Lest I sound unadventurous, please consider that I'm accustomed to locating the left windows key with my left index finger by finding the left control key with it first and then sliding it one to the right, to the Windows key. So that's what my fingers and hands are accustomed to doing. I just tried using my left index on the Windows key and finding the Tab key with my little finger. No way. Anyway, I'm perfectly happy with what I discoveredisconcerted, as I have two hands. Although if I somehow lost my right hand, I'm sure I'd retrain myself to do all this with my left. Just strikes me oddly. But let a hundred flowers bloom in the Windows courtyard, by all means. Oh, I don't use Vista, so that's not a concern to me, but thanks for mentioning it. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jeffrey Shockley" <jawswizard@xxxxxxxxx> To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Sunday, May 13, 2007 3:45 PM Subject: RE: A convenient alternative to Alt Tab Hi, You can also use the left Windows Key. However, I don't know how well this works with Windows Vista due to the visual changes and Windows 3d flip. I did this once on my brother's mew Vista machine, and it didn't put you right on the task bar. HTH, Jeff Check out my blog! Not that I mind doing that so terribly, but this is pretty slick: Just press Windows key plus tab. That's the right Windows key, of course. What this does is land you immediately in your task bar, which is where a sighted user would be clicking on the icons that represent open applications. Now, I know I can get to the Task Bar by going to the Desktop with Windows M or Windows D, and then tabbing around from Desktop to start menu to system tray and so forth until I land in the Task Bar. But when I thought that was my only alternative to repeatedly pressing alt tab, I passed on it. But with this, you just press right Windows key plus tab, and you're on the first icon in your Task Bar representing one of your open apps. From there, if you don't want to click on and restore that one, you just go back and forth with your arrow keys until you find the icon you do want to restore, and there you go. I know, this is 1. off topic, except that you wouldn't have to explore and discover such things if you didn't use a screen reader, of course and, 2. everybody probably knows it, already, and my blundering into it when I'd meant to press alt tab makes me the last one to know. In any case, if this is helpful to someone, great.
